It’s hard to believe we’ll need hats, scarves, gloves, or anything of the sort anytime soon with this early September heat wave, but end of season is always the perfect time to start shopping for the next. Now that it’s time to see what autumn 2018 has to offer in the accessories department, I’m sharing a few ideas to help your fall cool-weather accessories start off smashing and continue long into winter.
Cold weather accessories play a big part in your everyday style, because they’re pieces you tend to wear over and over again once you find something that works. But, you wouldn’t wear the same outfit in the office to weekend brunch, so why shouldn’t your outer layers reflect that? I always keep several styles of winter accessories on hand to match my look from day to day.
When it comes to hats, all beanies are not created equal. There are the more bohemian styles that fall loosely in the back and are meant to be worn back on the forehead, there are fun faux-fur pom-pom styles, your standard fisherman’s hat, cashmere skullies, and the list goes on. But don’t be afraid to think outside the hat box: wool fedoras or sheepskin earmuffs can be an eye-catching look that are also effective. If a classic black, knit, well-fitted beanie is more your style, add a scarf in a brighter hue to keep the grey days from getting you down.
Print-mixing is more than welcome when it comes to scarves, hats, and gloves, but as a general rule, try to mix just two out of the three. Your leopard-print hat and tartan gloves make a great statement, so mesh them with a soft camel scarf. Rocking a black beret? Throw on a heather-striped scarf and leather color-blocked gloves. Mix up your favorite plaid blanket scarf by wearing a soft, knit beret and faux-fur gloves.
Have your shopping list ready after all that? I know I do! Accessories are one area that secondhand stores really shine. They’re one of the easiest ways to change up a look and initially, are often purchased impulsively, meaning people can tire of what they have quickly and sell them barely used! Time to hit your local Style Encore store—as always, happy shopping.
